Urrgggggg

Been sick the past few days, not a good way to finish my first week back. Been feeling generally awful, and messed up badly enough I haven't been able to think straight until just lately. That's a real shame, because I couldn't even use the time for reading or being creative.

On the bright side I did have enough consciousness to fire up a game of Angband and managed to do the best I've done yet. Not so great a performance compared with winning the game, but for me I am happy. Tried following what seems to be the favoured playstyle among the community currently and diving fast (or faster than I would / have been, anyway), staying balanced on what I felt was the edge of my survivability.

It was a lot of fun. I got to see a variety of new monsters and find new and exciting items in the dungeon, although I fell afoul of overconfidence in changes to item identification, and managed to put on a ring that was actually cursed instead of merely negatively enchanted, so, oops. And I started running in to uniques I hadn't seen before (a unique monster in Angband being one, usually named, of which there is only one in the dungeon but which can reappear until killed). Carefully avoided Wormtongue the first time I saw him, around dungeon level 8 or 9 - considering Morgoth is down at level 100, these are still weak monsters in the grand scheme of things.

Down on level 10 the level feeling I got was 'excellent', which made for incentive to stay around and see what was so nifty. Well, there were certainly some nifty items picked up there, but there were also at least three uniques on the level. Ah well, so far for me that sort of level feeling seems to code for 'the monsters here will kill you'. When I came down the stairs I was in a room with a whole group of cave orcs, which certainly helped the nervous atmosphere of that level. I think one of them dropped that nifty mace.

Then the first unique encountered was Brodda the Easterling, who I tried to avoid, but came after me anyway. That fight nearly ended the game, cost several potions and a lot of wand charges to survive, but did provide the weapon I was wielding at the end, mainly to find out what it did, but it was good enough to be primary weapon anyway.

Wormtongue (I keep going to call him Saruman, but that entity he is not) showed up again, attacked and insulted me, then fortunately left before I died. Probably should have stayed in a quiet room to rest and recover, rather than healing while walking, as I encountered a large number of kobolds, and finally Mughash the Kobold Lord. Possibly I waited too long to try and escape from him, but he made it harder too. Did not realise confusion prevented reading scrolls. Plus, the scroll of teleportation in my inventory was unidentified, and I chose not to risk reading that unknown scroll in favour of what I thought had been a better prospect of escape. Alas. Anyway, here's the character dump, for them as cares to read it.

One can see I had a couple of stacks of negatively enchanted bolts stashed in my house - all I knew was they were magical, and hoped to save up for a crossbow to fire them with.

The cutlass had been my main weapon for the previous couple of levels, when I tried out the mace and bastard sword after acquiring them, in order to learn their enchantments. At the time of death I only knew the bastard sword's direct combat bonuses, not that it was a sword of undead slaying. It was still the best weapon I'd seen without that.
