A Treat

Once and a while, I come up with a good idea for a scene. If I'm particularly lucky, I'll even be able to write it down in the heat of it. Yesterday I was fortunate enough for that to occur just as I was leaving for work.

The following is what resulted. It's from the middle of part 4, near the end of the story. Click the link to read...

Akisa realizes the curtained bed she has sat next to for days – and has held some late night arguments – has been occupied by a non-speaking (comatose?) patient.

SARAH
It was nice, wasn't it? Being a normal, happy girl?

AKISA
Sarah?

SARAH
Who else?

AKISA
No...This isn't happening, you're supposed to be gone. I thought I had finally killed you...

SARAH
I am you. I have always been you. I always will be you. I exist as long as you do.

AKISA
That's not true. (thinking) The lesion!

Flashback to earlier in Akisa's hospital visit. A doctor explaining several x-rays

DOCTOR
We suspected a concussion, so we did an X-ray. There wasn't anything except this. (pointing to a smudge on a brain cross-section)

End flashback.

AKISA
You don't exist at all. You're just a thing in my head.

SARAH
Maybe. Maybe I'm a malevolent spirit. Or maybe I'm that monstrosity growing inside you. "Akisa, Mother of the monster", HA!

AKISA
I won't let that happen.

SARAH
Really? You know there's only one way to be rid of me forever. And you don't have the courage to do it. Not without Novella, that is.

AKISA
Novella?

SARAH
Did you forget the plan? You need that little gender-confused freak to hold your hand all the way to the gallows.

Akisa stops sobbing and shuddering and falls silent. A smile breaks across her face.

AKISA
(laughing)
You...will never have Novella.

SARAH
What?

AKISA
You don't get it, do you? Did you think her survival was an accident? I saved her! She'll never be Noel again!

SARAH
(seethes)

AKISA
She'll never listen to you again! She'll never...listen to me again...
(beat)
And I don't need her any longer.
